During an interview with the CBS Evening News,[score]Hillary Clinton[/score] was asked flat out, “Have you always told the truth?”
Clinton’s response was what reporter Scott Pelley immediately referred to as giving herself “wiggle room.”
On the topic of leveling with the American people, Clinton could only say “I have always tried to.”
She continued to avoid the word ‘Yes’ instead saying “I don’t believe I ever have, I don’t believe I ever will.”
Watch the exchange below:
Here is a transcript of the exchange:
SCOTT PELLEY: In ’76, Jimmy Carter famously said, ” I will not lie to you.”
HILLARY CLINTON: Well, I have to tell you, I have tried in every way I know how, literally from my years as a young lawyer, all the way through my time as Secretary of State to level with the American people.
PELLEY: You talk about leveling with the American people. Have you always told the truth?
CLINTON: I have always tried to, always, always.
PELLEY: Some people are going to call that wiggle room that you just gave yourself “always tried to.” I mean Jimmy Carter, “I will never lie to you.”
CLINTON: You’re asking me to say, “have I ever?” I don’t believe I ever have. ?” I don’t believe I ever have, I don’t believe I ever will. I am going to do the best I can to level with the American people.
Jeff Bechdel, America Rising PAC communications director, said the exchange shows “what American voters have already come to suspect – she is not honest and trustworthy. Her inability to answer a simple, straightforward question about her honesty tells you everything you need to know.”
RNC spokesman James Hewitt also responded to the interview saying:
The fact Hillary Clinton felt the need to waffle on a question about whether she is a liar is precisely why two-thirds of the American people think she’s dishonest and untrustworthy.
A recent WSJ/NBC poll indicates that a third of Democratic primary voters say the issue of honesty and trustworthiness matters the most to them when choosing a candidate. Socialist Bernie Sanders is winning that group 48% to 19% for Clinton.
NBC’s Chuck Todd said of these honesty numbers, “They continue to dog Clinton.”
