Man transitioning to woman challenges Facebook’s prohibition on displaying female nipples

You may need a scorecard for this one. You will certainly need to be up on “current events” — particularly, the “free the nipple” movement whereby women are demanding the same right as men to display the entirety of their breasts in public. (It is assumed that the reader is thoroughly acquainted with the trend toward self-identifying with a sex other than the one into which you were biologically assigned at birth.)

The protagonist in this tale is a person called Luna Winters, who was born a man and is in the process of becoming a woman (well along, judging from her pictures). Winters, who is determined not only to liberate her true gender but to show it off in public, posted an image of her bare chest on Facebook — and was summarily informed that the picture violated guidelines on indecency.

As PinkNews (aka “Europe’s largest gay news service”) explains:

The social networking site introduced new community guidelines earlier this year which affirmed a ban on homophobic hate speech – but also made public its guidance on nipples.

The guidance states that “we restrict some images of female breasts if they include the nipple” – but contains no mention of male ones, allowing men to appear topless but not women.

Winters’s argument is that her “transition” is not yet complete and that the photo of her with her boobs exposed is actually the photo of a male of the species. In a message to Facebook, Winters wrote:

Though you may think it, I haven’t broken your roles on showing female nipple.

I’m transitioning and for all official legal and medical paperwork… I am male. Your rules specifically state ‘female’ and as I’m male I ask you, where do you differentiate between one gender and the next?

I’ve seen men on here with bigger tits than me yet you do not censor them?

I’m more than happy to have a conversation.

The question is are they?
