Deedra Abboud, a Phoenix attorney and community activist, announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Arizona’s 6th district, challenging Republican [score]Jeff Flake[/score].

Abboud made her announcement at a rally in downtown Phoenix in April, referencing her Muslim heritage.

“The journey that I have decided to take on today is not just for the people who look like me or sound like me, but for all Arizonans,” Abboud told those in attendance. She added:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

We cannot continue to go backwards on this path that weakens our children’s education, strips health care from people who need it the most, locking up and breaking up families, and, once again, empowering big banks that caused the worst housing crisis in Arizona.

And while she may not want to “go backwards,” her jump into the race turned things upside down, including – literally – the state flag of Arizona.

Via the Conservative Tribune:

Well, speaking of backwards … someone in her campaign really ought have taken a look at the Arizona flag flapping in the background behind Abboud — upside down.

“I am with the growing majority of Arizonans who know that anger and resistance can only take us so far,” Abboud added. “We need to unite to move our families forward. We need to unite to move Arizona forward. We need to unite to move America forward.”

Most law-abiding Arizonans would probably also be in favor of displaying their flag correctly, but that’s just speculation.

Here is how the Arizona state flag looks when properly flown:

Flag etiquette for the United States flag indicates that hanging the Stars and Stripes upside down is a signal of distress. Sometimes, it is used as a form of political protest.

A spokesman for Abboud, however, has confirmed that the upside-down Arizona flag was simply a mistake, and not a statement of any kind.

As for Abboud’s qualifications, Arizonans might take note of the fact she provided legal aide to Garland terrorist Elton Simpson. As Buzzfeed reported, “At the time, Abboud helped a few of his other friends navigate the system to get him out on bail.”
