Earlier this month, LU’s Ben Bowles reported on the murder of a white motorist in Cincinnati who accidentally struck a black toddler, exited his car to check on the child’s condition, and was shot to death for his trouble.

On Thursday a grand jury returned murder indictments of two men who stand accused of what the prosecutor described as a  “disgusting” and race-related crime, according to CBS affiliate WBTV.

Police already have what is tantamount to a confession by one of the two suspects, who phone 911 after the shooting and told the dispatcher:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

I took care of dude. I killed him. He’s dead. He dead. The dude that hit you by the car. He dead. I killed him. I’m serious he’s dead. The dude that him you [sic] with the car… I killed him.

You hear me? He dead. I killed him. He dead. You good. Your daddy got you. You know I love you don’t you. I’m here with you. I love you baby.

The victim, 44-year-old Jamie Urton, was driving to work when he accidentally hit the 4-year old son of ironically named Jamall Isaiah Killings.

According to Prosecutor Joe Deters, the unsupervised 4-year-old wandered into the street and  the path of the oncoming car. The boy was not seriously hurt, but that seemed not to phase Killings, who beat the driver senseless before a second man, Deonte Baber, fired five shots, killing Urton on the spot. Baber, who fled the scene after the shooting, remains at large.

Earlier reports suggesting that Killings was also armed have proved incorrect, though he has still been charged as complicit in the murder. “He’s the one who opened the door, he’s the one who started it,” Deters as quoted as saying.

Video, shot by a bystander, captured the slaying, but will not be released until the trial.
