Meet Carlos Esparza. He is suspected of being in the country illegally. But that’s the least of the crimes he is suspected of committing. He has been arrested in San Antonio on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated sexual assault. His victim? The 7-year-old daughter of his girlfriend.
According to My San Antonio, the first inkling the victim’s mother had that something was wrong was that the child was “walking funny as if she was in pain.” When the mother pressed the girl for details, she said that Esparza had hurt her, according to a court affidavit.
The girl told investigators her mother put her to bed but she and her other siblings went downstairs to watch TV. Esparza was allegedly on the couch under a blanket when he grabbed her and put her on his lap. He then allegedly took off the girl’s underwear and his clothes, and sexually assaulted the girl in several ways, the arrest affidavit said.
The victim also said he told her not to tell anyone about the activity, as he would not come over anymore otherwise.
“The defendant’s [Esparza] sexual conduct was harmful to the child’s mental and emotional welfare,” the affidavit said.
Esparza, who is being held in Bexar County Jail on a $75,000 bond, has a prior arrest record for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and narcotics. If he is convicted, Esparza faces up to 99 years in prison.
