Guess which candidate is the new ‘Jesus’?

Guess which candidate is the new ‘Jesus’?

In spite of the fact that grizzled media personalities reported feeling a thrill up the leg on hearing Barack Obama speak — and even compared his political advent to “the New Testament” — everyone pretty much knew that “meme” images like the one below were a joke.

No one thought Obama was really, you know, Jesus.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

There might be a question in that regard about some supporters of Hillary Clinton, however.  At a rally for Hillary on Saturday, in Portsmouth, NH, a local singing group showed up to serenade the candidate with a gospel song in which Hillary’s name was inserted for “Jesus.”

The song is “Woke up this Morning with My Mind on Jesus,” popularized by gospel great Mavis Staples.  The women’s choir belting it out in Hillary’s honor is Voices from the Heart, which describes its musical mission thus:

Our powerful and eclectic songs range from African-American spirituals to Korean songs for unity, South African anti-apartheid songs to Macedonian love songs.  The songs are powerful testaments to the triumph of the human spirit.  Sung with the strength of 200 voices, the songs delight and inspire audiences.

Technically, the song “Woke up this Morning with My Mind on Jesus” is a testament to, you know, Jesus.  “Hallelujah,” of course, means “Praise God!”  “Singin’ and prayin’ with my mind on Jesus” (lyrics at the bottom) is pretty pointed.

Maybe it’s all a joke, like the triple-play “Obama-as-Norman-Rockwell-painting-a-self-portrait-as-Jesus” image.  But Hillary supporters are known for having a remarkably worshipful attitude toward their candidate.  That might be one reason why an observer at another rally in Cleveland interpreted a commitment form to “vote for Hillary” as something Hillary fans had to sign in order to attend the event. (The Hillary campaign said afterward that signing the form wasn’t a requirement to be allowed in.)

Interestingly, the tweet embedded at American Mirror’s report on the gospel number (link above), which seemed to have a photo of Hillary with the adoring women’s choir, has now been scrubbed from Twitter.  Go ye therefore and figure.

“Woke up this Morning with My Mind on Jesus”

Well, woke up this mo’nin
With my mind, stayin’ on Jesus
Woke up this mo’nin
With my mind, stayin’ on Jesus
Halleluh, halleleluh

Well, singin’ an prayin’ with my
Stayin’ on, Jesus
Singin’ and playin’ with my mind
Stayin’ on

Well, stayin’ and playin’
Halleluh, halleluh

Well, walkin’ an talkin’ with my
Stayin’ on
Walkin’ an talkin’ with my mind
Stayin’ on, Jesus

Halleluh, halleluh

Well, singin’ and prayin’
Stayin’ on, Jesus
Singin’ an playin’ with my mind

Halleluh, halleluh.
