Lib radio host’s plan for cleansing South of Confederate sins dumbest yet

And here you thought the plan to dig up the earthly remains of a Confederate Civil War general and his wife represented the final breach with sanity in the anti-Confederacy mania sweeping the nation. You may want to reconsider after learning about the idea put forth by liberal radio host Thom Hartmann. On his show on July 7, Hartmann suggested that maybe what America needed to rid itself of its racist inclinations once and for all was to “recoccupy the South with Union forces and and restart Reconstruction.”

The point of departure for Hartmann’s mind-boggling recommendation was a July 3 article in Politico that addresses how the backward South skews the nation’s freedom and equality indices downward. Here is the money portion of the rant, an audio clip of which follows:

So, you know, should we, a) restart Reconstruction or b) just let the South go their own way? Let the Confederate states say you can fly that flag, you can have your own country. Good luck.

The idea of sending in “Union” troops is an intriguing one. I assume he is referring to the U.S. military, but that agglomeration of fighting men (and nowadays women) has a number of bases in the South. Nearly half of all active duty service members, moreover, come from southern states:

Following Hartmann’s argument to its logical conclusion, the solution (call it a “final solution”) to the problem of southern ignorance would be to reprosecute the Civil War from start to finish. It would be unfathomably costly in lives and treasure, but maybe this time the North would succeed in beating liberal sensibilities into those hayseeds in the South.
