Last month, I wrote about a New Jersey deli owner who had managed to stir up a hornet’s nest by posting a sign in his store’s window to the effect he was celebrating “white history month.” The article was framed as a cautionary tale about the dangers of staging provocative stunts like this, which I argued play into the hands of culture warriors. This deli owner found this out himself when his business fell into such desperate straits that he was forced to close his doors.
Now word of another stunt has surfaced, but this time the story may have a different ending. For one thing, the business is owned by two Mexican immigrants, Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez. For another, the event they are commemorating — White Appreciation Day — lasts, as its name denotes, a single day, not a month. For a third, Antillon and Jimenez make a persuasive argument, telling BuzzFeed:
We have a whole month for Black History month …. [and] Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans.
On June 11, white customers of their Milliken, Colo., restaurant, Rubbin Buttz BBQ, will receive a 10% off their order.
The event reportedly started as a joke, but Antillon and Jimenez have since become quite earnest about the day, adding to the sign in their window the advice that “all Americans should be celebrated.”
So far, the reaction to the promotion has been predictably mixed. The ACLU is threatening a lawsuit, claiming that it is illegal in the state of Colorado for service establishments to discriminate based on the basis of race. In addition, local activists have protested the event, prompting the owners to post on the restaurant’s Facebook page:
We’re sure many of you have heard about our event coming up on June 11th. (You can find it online)Although we’ve had…

One detail about Antollin that is almost certain to be held against him is his position on guns. BuzzFeed notes:
Before purchasing the restaurant, he founded the group Guns for Everyone in 2010. He hosts occasional “Free Concealed Carry Classes” at his restaurant.
He is also currently the co-director of the Colorado Campaign for Equal Rights, whose primary focus is adding an initiative to allow legal marijuana users to obtain a concealed handgun permit.
