U of Chicago Sex Week includes ‘Temple of C*m,’ ‘Taste of Kink,’ rope-tying

A riddle for you: What do Wicked PicturesEarly2Bed Sex Store, and the University of Chicago have in common? The answer is Sex Week, of which the first two enterprises are corporate sponsors.

The schedule of events, which is here, reveals that the weeklong festivities officially kick off tonight with a Lascivious Ball (clothing optional). Then tomorrow, they get down to serious business with a Rope Workshop (“Want to learn to tie your partner up? Curious about bondage, but didn’t know how to try on your own?”) and a session on Sex Outside the Lines (which explores “monogamy, kink, queer life,” and explodes the myth of “normal sex”).

According to Campus Reform, there is even instruction on “how to safely electrocute your partner for sexual pleasure,” which is surprising not only because the administration is willing to countenance an activity so patently dangerous but because students at this highly competitive school don’t know that “safe electrocution” is an oxymoron. (The word electrocute means “kill by electric shock.”)

Sex Week at college is nothing new and is, if the truth be told, only marginally sexual. These events, which go by a variety of names — sometimes they are billed as sex-ed workshops — are efforts to raise awareness (and, it is hoped, acceptance) of alternative lifestyles. Note that one of the sponsors of the U Chicago’s Sex Week is the Office of LGBTQ Student Life.
