State Dept mouthpiece Jen Psaki: Let a smirk be your umbrella

The situation in the Middle East is grave right now. Iraq has largely fallen back into the hands of al Qaeda, President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai is seriously miffed with the U.S. and especially its leader, and Iran is moving apace with its plans to become a nuclear power. The situation here at home with regard to the Middle is no less grave. President Obama is threatening to veto Democrat-backed legislation to amp up sanctions against Iran, accusing members of his own party of war-mongering.

In light of all this, my question is what does State Department spokeswoman find all that damned funny? Don’t get me wrong. She doesn’t smirk constantly. Just when she is answering questions posed by the enemy, which includes Fox News’s James Rosen.

BizPacReview chronicled one curious instance of this unseemly behavior back in early December:

A body language expert could have a field day analyzing the reaction of the State Department spokeswoman as she fumbled her way through pointed questions from a Fox News reporter on why reporters were lied to about the years long secret negotiations with Iran.

Spokeswoman Jen Psaki kept breaking into odd, beaming smiles as Fox’s Chief Washington Correspondent James Rosen pressed her on why the State Department continually denied the Obama administration was engaged in secret talks with Iran over its nuclear program, reportedly since 2011.

A video of the exchange follows.

One might charitably call Psaki’s case of the giggles a nervous laugh — a distress signal from someone in over her head — though they seem to me to have more the character of a defiant smirk, a sign of overconfidence from someone who considers herself above it all.

Either way, Psaki needs to be discharged for behavior unbecoming a member of a presidential administration — that or a high colonic to wipe the inappropriate grin off her face.
