If Obama had a son, he might look like 17-year-old De’Marquis Elkins. In all likelihood, that name doesn’t ring a bell, so some background information is in order. In March, Elkins was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 13-month-old baby as the child sat in his stroller. A second adolescent, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, was also charged as an accomplice in the crime, though prosecutors plan to try him as a juvenile.
According to the Huffington Post, Sherry West, the mother of the dead child, said she was walking near her home the morning of March 21 with her baby, Antonio, when she was approached by two boys demanding money. West told police that one of them held a gun and threatened to kill her baby if she didn’t capitulate with their demand.
West said she pleaded with the gunman.
He asked me for money and I said I didn’t have it. When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They’re expensive. And he kept asking and I just said `I don’t have it.’ And he said, `Do you want me to kill your baby?’ And I said, `No, don’t kill my baby!’…
The boy proceeded to go around to the stroller and he shot my baby in the face. And then he just shoved me when I started screaming and he ran down London Street with the little boy.
West herself was shot twice — one bullet grazed her ear and another struck her leg above the knee — though initially she was unaware she had been wounded.
Several people in the neighborhood called 911 after they heard the gunshots fired.
New York’s Daily News reports that De’Marquise Elkins’ mother and aunt were arrested for lying to the police during their brief manhunt for the suspects.
Meantime, as Ben Kinchlow of WND noted on Sunday, even though Elkins will be tried as an adult, the maximum sentence he will receive if convicted is life in prison. The death penalty has been removed from the table as an option.
As Kinchlow, who is himself black, goes on to note:
The tragic truth is most of us are not aware of this story because since it involved blacks killing whites, the national media paid it little attention. Can you imagine the furor had Antonio been black and De’Marquise white? Oh, you’re right, we don’t have to imagine the outrage, furor and demands for the U.S. government to become involved. We have the Martin-Zimmerman case.
