Leprosy cases fall to 167,356

“Reported leprosy cases continue to decline worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, 167,356 new cases were reported globally in 2025, down 3.1 percent from 2024 and 23.3 percent from 2016,” notes The Doomslayer.

Chile recently eliminated leprosy.

Leprosy cases also fell 5.5% from 2023 to 2024. “The number of global leprosy cases in 2024 was” also “19 percent lower than in 2014,” reports The Doomslayer.

The World Health Organization notes that “During 2024, a total of 172,717 new cases were reported globally, corresponding to a rate of new case detection of 21.1 per million population.”

Most of the cases — 124,295 — were detected in southeast Asia. Most of the remaining cases were in Africa and South America.

Bhutan recently eliminated rabies as a public-health problem.

Rabies cases have fallen by 12,000 in neighboring India, to less than 6,000 cases per year: “Dogs are biting less in India. A 2025 survey reported 9.1 million dog bites, down from 17 million recorded in 2003. Over the same period, the number of rabies deaths in India dropped from over 17,000 to 5,726,” reports The Doomslayer.

Malaria cases have fallen 80 percent in India since 2015.
