Thirteen people were wounded in two mass shootings at Minneapolis homeless encampments Monday, and five remain in critical condition in what police say may have been connected attacks.
Gunfire first erupted just after 11 a.m. near East Lake Street and Stevens Avenue, injuring five people, including one with life-threatening wounds. Hours later, around 10 p.m., about 30 shots rang out at another encampment near South 28th Avenue and East Lake Street, hitting eight people, according to ABC News. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers found two people in tents with gunshot wounds to the head. Three other victims took themselves to hospitals, he said. Investigators recovered multiple shell casings, suggesting someone inside the encampment fired back.

“This is tragic. It’s horrible. It’s unacceptable, and, sadly, it’s not surprising,” Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters Tuesday morning.
“Here we are yet again in the aftermath of a mass shooting. This is not normal,” O’Hara added.
The Minneapolis mayor said the city has tried for months to clear the encampment on private property where the second shooting occurred but faced pushback from the owner.
“These homeless encampments are not safe either for the people that are in them, nor are they safe for the surrounding neighborhood,” he said.
The city has now recorded five mass shootings in three weeks, including an Aug. 27 attack at Annunciation Catholic School that left two children dead and 21 others wounded.
No arrests have been made in either of Monday’s shootings, and investigators are still probing possible connections, police said.
