On Sunday, the Democrats went all in on their fixation with nailing Donald Trump on something — anything — that would justify bringing articles of impeachment.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler took center stage on ABC’s “This Week,” announcing that his committee would be sending out over 80 demands for documents from people people and institutions affiliated with Trump with an eye toward gathering evidence of possible obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power charges. Nadler even offered “proof” of the obstruction of justice charge in Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey and his referring to the Mueller investigation as a “witch hunt.”
Democratic Sen. Mark Warner also made the rounds of Sunday programs, appearing on both CNN’s “State of the Union” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Warner varied his message slightly, telling CNN host Jake Tapper that there’s “plenty of evidence” that President Donald Trump collaborated with Russia, while later asserting on NBC that “there’s no one that could factually say there’s not plenty of evidence of collaboration or communications between Trump Organization and Russians.”
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Well, actually there is one person who appears to be on the verge of “factually saying there’s not plenty of evidence of collaboration or communications between Trump Organization and Russians”: Robert Mueller.
After placing their supreme confidence in the special counsel’s probe, which is nearing its end after almost two years, Democrats now seem to be questioning Mueller’s competence. This is a radical departure from the hosannas they sang to Mueller when the Justice Department tapped him to spearhead an investigation into Russian election meddling and its ties to President Trump’s campaign in May of 2017. “I’m surprised and thrilled,” said Democratic Rep. Jim Himes of the House Intelligence Committee, who added: “I can’t think of anybody with more integrity and who will have as much credibility within the FBI as Bob Mueller.”
And now? As Dems fire up their base with lofty promises of their own slam-dunk investigation, an impartial observer might be surprised to learn that a two years-long probe by a special counsel ever existed.
In his interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd, a video of which follows, Warner said:
I’ve been around politics a long time, just as you have. I have never in my lifetime seen a presidential campaign from a person of either party have this much outreach to a foreign country, and a foreign country that the intelligence community and our committee has validated, intervened massively in our election, and intervened with an attempt to help one candidate, Donald Trump, and to hurt another candidate, Hillary Clinton.
But the facts say otherwise.
Maybe the third investigation at taxpayers’ expense will be the charm.
