Colonel William Crawford, who fought valiantly in the American Revolutionary War, met a ghastly end. He was tortured and burned at the stake by American Indians in retaliation for a massacre that, while execrable, was not ordered or led by Crawford.
Now, 235 years later, the colonel has been decapitated. At least his statue has. The Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum reports that the statue, which occupied a niche outside the Crawford County Courthouse, was vandalized. When employees at the courthouse arrived Friday morning, the found the statue was missing its head.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
From the report:
Because the courthouse is owned by the county, the case is being handled by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sheriff Scott Kent.
Officers aren’t sure when the vandalism took place, Kent said.
“We’re still reviewing the footage,” he said.
Attorney Joel Spitzer is quoted as saying, “It’s actually quite shocking to see this in little old Bucyrus, where we really have little connection to what’s going on in the south. … William Crawford was from the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War, so I thought he was fairly safe.”
Spitzer later hazarded a guess that this might be a case of “monkey see, monkey do.” It’s hard to disagree with the assessment that some lower primate was likely the culprit.
It’s impossible to know how far the current wave of lunacy will carry, but it doesn’t look like it will be abating anytime soon.
