U.S. and China agree to lower tariffs on some goods

“The United States and China have agreed to lower tariffs on goods worth about $60 billion in annual trade between the two countries. Each side’s list covers roughly $30 billion of imports from the other, based on 2024 trade figures. China plans to cut tariffs on US agricultural products, seafood, wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices, while the United States plans to cut tariffs on Chinese consumer goods such as small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and children’s car seats,” reports Human Progress.

Mexico has moved to buy American and reduce purchases of Chinese goods, in an effort to obtain a better trade deal with the U.S., its largest trade partner.

China no longer relies mainly on coal for electricity.

Last year, China completed the Great Green Wall, a 46-year project to encircle its largest desert with trees. China did this to prevent desertification and curb the sandstorms that plague parts of China in springtime. The Great Green Wall is an 1800-mile “green belt” around the Taklamakan desert in China’s vast northwestern region of Xinjiang. The final 300 feet of trees in the green belt were planted on the desert’s southern edge in November.
