Self-piloting airplane completes multi-leg journey across America

“An autonomous aircraft has completed a multi-leg flight across the United States. Using Joby Aviation’s autonomous flight technology, the converted Cessna traveled 3,199 miles from California to North Carolina, handling taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing without control inputs from its onboard safety pilot,” reports The Doomslayer.

“Joby Aviation said an aircraft equipped with its technology has completed the first fully autonomous flight across the U.S. …The aircraft flew 3,199 miles with no control inputs from its onboard safety pilot, including autonomous taxi, takeoff, cruise and landing, which were supervised remotely. The company said the flight offers a proof point in its vision of integrating an autonomous system onto an already-certified airframe to scale up autonomous air logistics,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

Waymo self-driving taxis now transport thousands of passengers every day in American cities.

Self-driving trucks are already being used safely to supply oil and gas wells in Texas.

Self-driving cars are generally safer than human-driven cars. “Driverless Waymo vehicles have driven 170 million miles through December 2025 without a human driver in the car. Compared to the average human driver over the same distance, Waymo driverless cars experienced 83% fewer airbag deployment crashes, 82% fewer injury-causing crashes, and 92% fewer serious injury or worse crashes.”

Amazon is planning to produce up to 10,000 robotaxis per year in a California plant.
