Robotaxi without human controls approved

“The National Highway Traffic Safety ‌Administration has approved a Robotaxi design without human controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. The newly approved vehicle, developed by Zoox, Amazon’s robotaxi subsidiary, uses the space normally occupied by a driver to create a roomy carriage-like cabin for passengers,” reports The Doomslayer.

Amazon’s Zoox unit has won U.S. approval for limited commercial deployment of its novel steering-wheel-free robotaxis, ​a first for the autonomous ride industry, the U.S. auto safety agency said on Thursday.

Zoox said that the National Highway Traffic Safety ‌Administration’s decision gives the company federal approval to begin charging for rides, and that it will soon begin charging for service, first in Las Vegas, with additional markets to follow as it completes various state requirements.

The exemption granted by the agency from federal rules requiring human controls, first reported by Reuters, marks a milestone for companies developing robotaxis from the ground up, ​rather than modifying conventional cars under safety regulations written long before self-driving technology emerged.

Robotaxi use more than doubled in California in 2025, rising from 3.8 million kilometers per month at the end of 2024 to 9.4 million in December 2025.

Self-driving cars are generally safer than human-driven cars. Self-driving cars could reduce automobile fatalities by over 90%.

Amazon is planning to produce up to 10,000 robotaxis a year at a California plant.

As of February, Waymo provided 400,000 robotaxi rides per week, up from 200,000 a year earlier. “That number will likely grow even more this year, with the company planning to expand operations to more than 20 new cities,” noted The Doomslayer.

“Waymo is so safe that if every car was driven like a Waymo, about 9% of America’s life expectancy gap” compared to the nations with the longest life span “would disappear,” notes a commentator.

Robots are also saving lives by doing difficult and dangerous tasks. German robots hunted the North Sea for tens of thousands of unexploded World War II bombs.

Scientists have developed tiny robots made of human cells to repair damaged cells.
