“At approximately 1:50 a.m. today, a man was arrested near” Supreme Court “Justice Kavanaugh’s residence. The man was armed and made threats against Justice Kavanaugh. He was transported to Montgomery County Police 2nd District,” according to a Supreme Court spokesperson. That confirms a Washington Post report that a man with a weapon was detained near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home. He allegedly told police he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice.
The New York Post’s Karol Markowicz says that “the man taken into custody outside of Brett Kavanaugh’s house last night is a 26 year old white male with a California driver’s license. Previous address in Seattle.” “The man had a gun and said he was there to kill Kavanaugh.”
Many progressives are angry at the Supreme Court. Earlier, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said, “I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you.”
An armed man was arrested near Brett Kavanaugh‘s Maryland home after making threats against the Supreme Court justice, according to a court spokesperson.
The man was arrested at about 1:50 a.m. ET Wednesday, the spokesperson said. He was transported to Montgomery County Police 2nd District.
There has been a rise in threats against the court amid the national abortion rights debate and protests that have taken place across the US. The Department of Homeland Security issued a memo last month warning law enforcement that there are potential threats to members of the Supreme Court after a draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked.
The memo also said Supreme Court police have noticed a major uptick in social media threats of violence, with some currently under investigation. Some of those threats have been directed at the justices and the court building, which is now surrounded by fencing.
The arrest happened hours before the justices were scheduled to issue more rulings in the final weeks of the annual session.
Similarly, the Washington Post earlier reported:
A California man carrying at least one weapon near Brett M. Kavanaugh’s Maryland home has been taken into custody by police after telling officers he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice, according to people familiar with the investigation….Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates the man was angry about the leaked draft of an opinion by the Supreme Court signaling the court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade,” the 1973 decision that recognized a constitutional right to have an abortion.
