Even before the coronavirus pandemic was a gleam in some pathogen’s eye, Michigan Gov. Gretchen displayed a penchant for extremism. In 2019, for example, she threatened to veto a bill banning abortions in which fetuses’ limbs are torn off.
Since the pandemic began, her name has been appearing regularly in the headlines. First she vehemently declined the federal government’s offer of supplies of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to help treat patients with COVID-19. Then she promptly reversed course and requested the drugs.
But it’s her draconian bans that have really made her name a household word. According to Reason, she has banned “all public and private gatherings,” though Michiganders will still be allowed to buy lottery tickets. And as of Apr. 11, residents were banned from “travel between residences,” with a few exceptions.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Her constituents have begun to resent having Big Sister tell them they can and can’t do. This has resulted in thousands of protesters descending on the state capital:
“We’re gonna take our liberties and we’re gonna fight for them”
Protestors descend on Michigan’s capital to protest Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s lockdown orders.

Could there be a method behind Whitmer’s madness? Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson theorized on his show last night that Whitmer’s goal is to be chosen as presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, noting that the former vice president has indicated that she is one of the women under consideration. “She wants to be chosen by Joe Biden. That’s pretty clear,” Carlson said. “And she’s calculated that there is no penalty for petty authoritarianism.”
