OK, before we get entangled in mixed messaging, the former vice president appeared to be using straight to mean something other than the opposite of “gay.” But considering that earlier this week he told an exclusive crowd at the home of wealthy gay rights activist Roger Nyhus that “just five years ago, it would have been acceptable for a businessman to make fun of a gay waiter,” it’s hard to say with any certainty what he may have meant.
As the Washington Examiner notes, Biden was speaking to a scrum of reporters on Thursday when one asked, “Do you have a message for the rest of the world?” Biden replied, “Yes. America is coming back like we used to be: ethical, straight, telling the truth — supporting our allies. All those good things.”
Perhaps the biggest mystery is how Biden envisions that message to be different from Donald Trump’s embattled 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” but I’ll leave it to his handlers to explain that once they free themselves up from explaining Biden’s unforced error in using the adjective straight.
