Why Sally Hernandez, aka “Sanctuary Sally,” is still sheriff of Travis County, Texas, is a mystery for the ages. Hernandez, whose lengthy list of “accomplishments” includes releasing 142 criminal aliens for whom immigration officials had issued detainers in a single week, is now putting her own deputies’ lives at risk. She is refusing to fit them out with bulletproof rifle-resistant vests, which are mandated by the federal government.
Law Enforcement Today explains:
…Texas received $23 million in federal grant money that would allow its law enforcement departments to purchase 33,000 rifle-resistant vests. More than 400 law enforcement agencies can apply for them. But here is the catch: In order to do so the agencies need to comply with federal law. Moreover, each department head must sign a letter stating that its officers will cooperate with detainer requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
So determined is Hernandez to make a stand on behalf of migrants in her county illegally that last year she never even submitted an application for the $240,000 in federal grant money available to locales for purchasing the vests.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Retired police lieutenant Randy Sutton remarked that Hernandez’s decision is “sickening,” “unconscionable,” adding that all she has to do is “… simply do her job, which is to recognize detainers on prisoners.”
Hernandez’s actions in this matter rival for sheer looniness the vote by Democrats in the Judiciary Committee this past week against notifying ICE when an illegal alien fails a background check to buy a gun. For all the Dems’ posturing over the legal purchase of guns by American citizens, they are willing to throw caution to the wind when it comes to the illegal purchase of firearms by non-citizens.
In a similar vein, Sheriff Sally Hernandez is willing to forgo the oath she took to protect and serve the residents of Travis County in order to pursue her liberal agenda when it comes to illegal immigration.
