BLM activist caught driving stolen car

Louisville police arrested and charged a Black Lives Matter activist Monday for driving a stolen car.

Jason Gardner, a Black Lives Matter activist and a co-host on the podcast Strange Fruit, was arrested after police saw him driving a stolen car, reports WISTV.

A detective witnessed the car swerve in front of him during his lunch break, according the the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). When the driver, Gardner, got out of the car, the detective recognized Gardner from a felony warrant out of Marion County, Indiana.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The detective checked out the warrant and in the process learned that Gardner’s car was stolen.

“While awaiting backup and verifying the warrant, the detective briefly surveilled the suspect and vehicle and also learned the vehicle had been reported and confirmed to have been stolen. Backup officers arrived to assist and after a short time, Gardner returned to the vehicle and the officers took him into custody without incident,” said Dwight Mitchell, a spokesman for the LMPD.

Police are holding Gardner at Metro Corrections.

Some claim that Gardner is being incarcerated due to his activism in the Black Lives Matter Movement. A fellow activist disagreed, saying, “We don’t believe he was targeted over his activism. We believe he was arrested because of that car,” Chanelle Helm, a Black Lives Matter member, said to the Courier Journal.

Gardner is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Jefferson County District Court for an arraignment.
