If New York’s Daily News is anything, it is reliably liberal. Of late, it has also been reliably given to hissy fits, with front-page condemnations of (for example) GOP candidates daring to offer prayers for the victims of an Islamic terrorist massacre in San Bernardino, Calif.
One of the paper’s favorite targets in the current campaign season has been the equally over-the-top GOP front-runner, Donald Trump, publishing in March an “End of Days Guide of Fleeing the Country” in the event The Donald becomes the forty-fifth president of the United States.
So when it came to its endorsement for that post, it seemed like a no-brainer. The editorial board would choose either the absurdly far left candidate who yesterday assured Al Sharpton’s National Action Network that white privilege was the black community’s number one scourge — or Bernie Sanders.
Yesterday, the paper announced its decision; make that decisions. Yes, it came out in favor of Clinton. But it did something else that was unprecedented. It also endorsed John Kasich … kind of.
It was really more of a sidebar than a full-out endorsement. It was addressed, moreover, to “New York’s 2.7 million registered Republicans,” whom it urged to “break the fever that torments their party by voting for principled, pragmatic conservatism in the April 19 presidential primary.”
After a couple of paragraphs lauding Kasich’s “record of accomplishment in public life, … the credibility of his plans,” and his temperament, the editors went back to lashing out at Trump — something they seemingly can’t get enough of.
But the mere idea that the paper named a preferred Republican, going so far as to include a video of an interview with him (capture below), is pretty revealing. It not only underscores their utter loathing for Trump but suggests they recognize the very real possibility their worst fears might be realized in November and need to do everything they can to ward off that nightmare scenario.
Maybe Editor-in-Chief Jim Rich and his crew nay want to hang on to a copy of their End of Days Guide.
