Reportedly, parts of Russia are being catastrophically plagued with locusts this summer, destroying crops and provoking an emergency declaration from Moscow.
It’s probably not a sign of apocalypse. Locust swarms in temperate-zone croplands come and go with climate cycles; North America has experienced them several times in the last two centuries.
But now we have information technology to bring us the experience, up close and personal.
