White people, men banned from diversity rally at British university

How can you carry on a civilized conversation about diversity when you have all these “non-diverse” types around? That was the general import of am invitation to an event for students at the University of London, Goldsmiths, promoting equality. The event was organized by Bahar Mustafa, the university’s Welfare and Diversity Officer, who wrote on her Facebook page:

Invite loads of BME [black and minority ethnic] Women and non-binary [not exclusively male or female] people!! Also, if you’ve been invited and you’re a man and/or white PLEASE DON’T COME just cos i invited a bunch of people and hope you will be responsible enough to respect this is a BME Women and non-binary event only. [Emphasis added]

According to Daily Mail, the stated goal of the event, which was held at the student union this past Wednesday, was to persuade the faculty and administration to broaden the curriculum to include more courses relating to minority groups.

The ban on men and white students struck many as hypocritical since the organizers claim not to “tolerate any form of oppression, including racism, sexism or any other form of bigotry.”

Ultimately, the student union backed down after a backlash from students, one of whom described the exclusionary policy as “patronising beyond belief’.”
