‘Brownie’ troop selling ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ message instead of cookies

“On a Saturday afternoon in Oakland, a handful of 8 to 10 year old girls are gathered, in brown uniforms, giggling and eating cupcakes. They look like Girl Scouts, but it’s not just fun and games.” So begins an upbeat report by CBS Oakland affiliate KPIX. The focus is a brownie troop that, according to the author, Christin Ayers, is “learning social justice” instead of sewing.

“Racial grievance-mongering” would be a more apt description of what they are internalizing, judging from the propaganda these innocent young minds are regurgitating. “White policeman are killing black young folks such as women, men and children,” one of the children is quoted as saying. “Mike Brown. He was shot because he didn’t do nothing [sic]. Only the police officer shot him because of his skin color,” says another.

Out of the mouths of babes and all that.

The troop, which wears berets similar to the ones worn by the Black Panthers, is called the “Radical Brownies.” Co-founder Marilyn Hollinquest is quoted as saying of the attire, “I think it’s very appropriate. A lot of the work the Black Panthers did was community oriented.” To the extent to which murder by committee can be called a community activity, she has a point.

Like the non-radical brownies, the radical troop can earn “merit” badges.

Their first badge, a fist emblazoned with the words Black Lives Matter. They earned it for marching in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Oakland last month.

When confronted with the charge that the adults running the group are brainwashing innocent children, Hollinquest counters that “kids already understand fairness and unfairness, so we take that understanding at an age-appropriate level.”

The question of whether the adults understand fairness remains to be seen.
