Christian college drops non-PC team name ‘Crusaders’

And the hits just come on coming on the team name/mascot front! This time, the injury appears to be self-inflicted. According to Fox News, Maranatha Baptist University, a Christian college in Watertown, Wisc., made the decision internally to eschew its moniker, the “Crusaders,” after nearly 50 years. The reason given by university officials? To better fit in with a “more global society.”

Matt Davis, the university’s executive vice president, said no complaints have been received by the school and stressed that it [the team name change] coincides with its [the school’s] name change from Maranatha Baptist College in December.

“But I also agree that times change and we understand that context changes,” Davis told FoxNews.com. “Our world has changed since 9/11 and we’ve become a more global society with the Internet. The heartbeat behind this was not political correctness, but expanded opportunities for our students.”

No problem, but Davis and company better get on the stick finding a replacement before all the good jihadist team nicknames are snapped up. You think I’m kidding? Last November, Palestinian Media Watch reported that soccer teams in the Palestinian territories were adopting the names of well-known terrorists as handles for their soccer teams. “Al-Hayat Al-Jadida,” the official daily newspaper of the Palestinian Authority, reported:

The Media Department at the Al-Quds University in Abu Dis… conducted the draw for the Martyr (Shahid) Jahjouh Football Tournament… which will begin on Thursday at the new El-Bireh [sports] field. Eight teams from the university will participate. [The teams] were named after Martyrs and divided into two groups. The first group included [teams named after] Mu’tasim Adwan, Amer Nassar, Ghassan Kanafani, and Dalal Mughrabi. The second group included [teams named after] Younes Jahjouh, Amer Nawfal, Khaldoun Shouman and Yahya Ayyash.

One of these honorees is credited with having blown himself up in a bombing attack that also claimed the lives of 37 people, including 12 children. Maybe it was this act of violence that prompted Davis to tell Fox News, “We’re having a blast with the process” of selecting a new mascot?

Fox notes that other schools whose team name is “Crusader” would rather fight than switch. Holy Cross in Massachusetts and Capital University in Ohio are among eight schools with no plans to join “a more global society.” Don’t be surprised if these institutions of higher learning receive a visit from the PC police now that the smell of blood is in the water.
