Let me preface the following remarks by assuring concerned readers that the first lady is safe and sound, and her whereabouts are known. She is in Hawaii, where the four Obamas vacationed for 17 days that included a Christmas celebration, golf outings, and dinners out.
Mrs. Obama, who turns 50 on Jan. 17, stayed over after the president and their two daughters jetted back to D.C. on Jan. 8 — a birthday present from her hubby. When confronted with the question of the added cost of Secret Service and the first lady’s separate return flight on military aircraft, the president said, “If it were up to me, I’d buy her a first class ticket on a commercial airliner. But it’s not.” But Americans should feel encouraged knowing that Obama understands the meaning of sacrifice.
Anyway, Byron York wonders aloud via Twitter:
Obama/daughters returned to DC from Hawaii week ago yesterday. First Lady stayed in HI. Just curious: When is she coming home?
It’s a fair question in light of past rumors that there is trouble in paradise for the Obamas. One of the photos released to the press shows the family attending the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The first lady looks anything but enthused.
