Talk about your cosmic justice! The Evansville Courier Press reports (h/t Steven Ein) that 21-year-old Arthur L. Jones committed a Plaxico Burress after shooting another man Monday night.

According to Evansville police, Jones shot Johnny E. Phillips, 26, three times near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Delaware Street just before 9:30 p.m. (For those with an interest in anatomy, the intersection of Sixth and Delaware is located directly beneath the sternum. Rimshot!)

Phillips’s injuries have been ruled non-life-threatening.

Jones showed up at St. Mary’s Medical Center just after midnight. It would later redound to his misfortune that he sought seek treatment at the same hospital Phillips had been brought to three hours earlier.

Initially, Jones told staff he was the victim of an attempted hold-up and stabbing, though the nature of the injury to his scrotum suggested it was a gunshot wound. After speaking with witnesses who seen the Phillips shooting, investigators determined that Jones’ injuries were indeed the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered before or after the confrontation with Phillips.

Police believe Jones shot himself in the course of either removing the weapon from his waistband or tucking it in after shooting Phillips. In addition to the wounds to his scrotum, Jones had also shot himself in the foot, both figuratively and literally.

Jones is expected to face charges of attempted murder and attempted armed robbery when he is released from the hospital.

As far as police have been able to determine, the two shooting victims knew each other prior to Monday’s incident.
