Bless me, Other, for I have sinned. That presumably is how Catholics in Germany will be starting confession if a minister in Angela Merkel’s government gets her way.
Reuters reports that Family Minister Kristina Schroeder suggested on Thursday that the Diety be officially referred to henceforth using the neuter article das instead of the masculine der.
In an interview with the German weekly Die Zeit, Schroeder shared her view that “the article is not important,” which is curious since she is the one demanding that it be changed. Her comments did not sit well with members of her own Christian Democratic Union (CDU) or its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU). Christine Haderthauer, the Bavarian social minister, told another popular German publication, Bild, “This intellectualized nonsense leaves me speechless.”
Merkel’s own spokesman, however, came down on Schroeder’s side. Asked about the kerfuffle at a news conference on Friday, Steffen Seibert said:
If you believe in God, the article is not important. If you speak to God in a different way, the prayers are still heard.
