It’s not third-world immigrants who are the problem, but some of their kids and their descendants, generally speaking. Right-wingers wanted to deport the Haitian migrants who live in Springfield, Ohio, because they mistakenly thought Haitians eat cats. But Haitians do not eat cats, unlike people in the Central African Republic. Haitian immigrants also have lower crime rates than citizens — even illegal-alien Haitians have lower rates of violent crime and property crime! Haitian immigrants are actually pretty well-behaved.
But U.S.-born Haitians have a higher crime rate — although not as high as blacks generally. Blacks account for at least half of all murders in the U.S., despite being only a seventh of the U.S. population. More than half of all people arrested for murder in 2019 were black. Rates of committing homicide “for blacks were more than 7 times higher than the rates for whites” between 1976 and 2005, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics in its publication, Homicide Trends in the United States.
Deporting Haitian migrants will be costly and painful for some businesses and communities, like Springfield, Ohio, which has a lot of Haitian migrants working in its factories. Ohio’s Republican Governor pointed out recently that Haitian migrants are a valuable workforce “in manufacturing,” staffing factories in places like Springfield, and that healthcare is the “most important” area of work for Haitian migrants nationally. “It’s Haitians who, many times, are taking care of your mom or your dad who has Alzheimer’s, taking care of family members who might be in a nursing home,” said Governor DeWine.
Congressman Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) has emphasized the severe impact that deporting Haitian migrants would have on New York’s healthcare industry. One-third of the more than 350,000 Haitians who had Temporary Protected Status work in healthcare. So Lawler says that deporting Haitians would “create a crisis” in hospitals, nursing homes and homes for retarded people. But the Trump administration recently declared an end to Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, which will terminate later this summer.
We should let the Haitian migrants who are already here stay, if they have healthcare or manufacturing jobs that are hard to fill. Admittedly, these Haitians’ descendants in the U.S. will probably have worse outcomes than whites, if they attend schools that teach them to view capitalism as evil and anti-black, and to view America as systemically racist. Left-wing ethnic studies programs that teach such things are spreading across America. Those programs teach black kids to view themselves as victims based on their race, disparage the ideas of hard work and individual responsibility, and reinforce the mentality among some black students that studying is “acting white” and an uncool white thing to do. Students taught to view themselves as victims “earn significantly less in adulthood” than other people.
As the Pew Research Center observes, “crime rises among second-generation immigrants as they assimilate.” And the children of black immigrants often seem to assimilate into black American culture, which is characterized by a relatively crime rate. Nigerian immigrants have a lower crime rate than U.S. citizens, but their kids appear to have a higher crime rate than U.S. citizens generally, although not as high a crime rate as blacks in general. That higher crime rate is a shame, because Nigerian immigrants disproportionately do useful jobs Americans tend to dislike, such as being prison guards: “Many states and countries have difficulty finding enough people willing to be prison guards. It’s not fun to be in a prison or around criminals, and prison guards can be attacked. Immigrants are often willing to be prison guards, though. So the United Kingdom has guest-worker visas for prison officers. Prison guards in Texas and the United Kingdom are disproportionately from Nigeria. Nigerians help keep U.S. prisons staffed, too, as is explained in the article ‘Nigerians Flock to Work in U.S. Prisons.'” Nigerian-Americans have much higher per capita incomes than U.S. blacks do.
Somali immigrants have higher crime rates than Americans generally, but that is an exception to the usual rule that immigrants have lower crime rates than natives. Ethnic Somalis commit a lot of fraud, but they are not exceptionally violent in the U.S. In cities like Minneapolis that have lots of Somalis, violent crime tends to be committed by African-Americans who are not immigrants, not Somalis. High-profile fraud rings have included Somali immigrants, though. And Somalis in Minnesota do commit violent crimes at a higher rate than the average Minnesotan. 72% of Minnesota’s murders are committed by blacks, who are only 8.3% of Minnesota’s population.
Allowing wide-scale immigration from the Third World is like taking out a loan. America gets a benefit now, but it has to pay for it later on. In the short run, America benefits from importing a man from the Third World to work as a roofer or crop-picker, jobs few Americans want to do. But the kids of that Third World immigrant won’t be happy doing unpleasant work like crop-picking, even if their low IQ means that is all they are fit to do. And they won’t be happy doing arduous work like roofing. Roofing frequently tops lists for the most physically grueling contractor jobs and is one of the most dangerous, ranking in the top five most hazardous professions in the country. There are some African countries like Somalia where people have very low IQs, and if lots of people from there immigrate to America and have kids with similarly low IQs, those kids will be a burden to our country, even if their parents are hard-working. Low IQ people have a much higher crime rate than high-IQ people.
It would be a bad idea to allow mass immigration from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has about 120 million people and is one of the most violent and backward nations on Earth. Congolese migrants in New York City complained that New York City doesn’t communicate with them in their own languages, making it hard for them to communicate with the city, and harder for their kids to learn. As one Congolese woman told the New York City Council’s committees on immigration and hospitals, “In the Congo, you have more than 500 languages… we need people who speak the native language to teach us. That is what we are asking the city and the city is refusing to accommodate.” Importing people who speak obscure African languages into America could place great burdens on our school systems, which are required by education bureaucrats to translate school notices into the languages spoken by students and their parents (and sometimes to provide instruction in those languages). Many Nigerians can speak some English, but few people in the Congo can speak English.
Immigration from Asia is usually a blessing. Asian immigrants have lower crime rates than Americans generally, and so do their kids. Asians generally have the lowest crime rate of any racial category. Only one percent of all murderers in 2019 were Asian. But immigration from Asia is likely to decline because birthrates are crashing all over Asia. Women in China, Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan typically have one child or no children these days, and those countries’ populations will soon fall a lot, resulting in less migrants to the west. Immigrants tend to be young people, who are better able to handle the culture shock of picking up a new language and finding a new job. So fewer Asian young people means fewer Asian immigrants.
Of all the continents, only Africa has a rapidly-rising population. If America is ever totally flooded by immigrants, they will be from Africa, not Latin America, where birth rates are crashing. In Mexico, the average woman has only 1.9 kids. In Colombia, the average woman has only 1.65 kids. In El Salvador, the average woman has only 1.77 kids. So these nations are not producing huge numbers of young people who might emigrate to the U.S. People who mistakenly fear that America will be swamped by Latin American immigrants are mostly unaware of these demographic shifts. It is Africa they should be thinking about, not Latin America.
Cuban immigrants integrate well into the United States, and their descendants do not have high crime rates. But weirdly, the Trump administration is trying to deport some of them:
In the U.S., President Donald Trump already has his hands full trying to deport millions of illegal aliens. Yet he is reducing the number of immigrants legally present in the country by ending a Biden-era parole program that gave temporary protected status to hundreds of thousands of migrants from countries like Cuba and Venezuela.
It is dumb to deport the Cubans and the Venezuelans (except the few who belong to Tren de Aragua or have committed crimes against other people). Venezuelan immigrants have a lower crime rate than Americans as a whole. Cubans and Venezuelan immigrants are disproportionately located in states like Florida and Texas that have big labor shortages. These migrants were mostly gainfully employed. They can read and write, in a language that is spoken in many U.S. businesses: Spanish, which often is spoken among workers in restaurants and on construction sites, unlike many Third World languages that are incomprehensible to Americans. The Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants were mostly an economic asset to the United States. It is usually good to provide refuge to people escaping communist countries. It was long the policy of the United States to provide refuge for basically anyone fleeing Cuba, before Obama ended that policy on January 12, 2017. Letting Cubans in benefited America.
