The phone rings and you answer. At first there is nothing but silence. Then there is an audible click, followed by the sounds of a room filled with banks of telephones.

Shortly after that, an individual with a conspicuously heavy foreign accent speaks up. “Hello, I am Tom from Window [sic] computer,” he says. “I am calling today because your computer have a virus.”

Been there? So have we all. That must include members of the Democratic National Committee, who were evidently so impressed — if not duped — by the scam that they resorted to a similar strategy in the hopes of shoring up their anemic fundraising numbers.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Granted, after posting morbidly low numbers in July – $3.8 million for the DNC compared to $10.2 million for the RNC – along with historically low numbers in May, the Democrats need to figure out something. But this? Do they really think their base is dumb enough to fall for such a scam? Wait, don’t answer that.

One social media user said she wouldn’t be surprised to find that the letters inside were crafted to resemble actual bills or collection notices. Here’s her answer:

Democrats in New York tried a similar tactic back in 2014, threatening voters with letters stating that their “official voting records” were being monitored and that if they didn’t turn out to vote Democratic the Party (that’s capital P) would “be interested to hear why not.”

Shaking down your own voters. What could possibly go wrong?

Aside from the July numbers, this chart shows just how bad things are for the DNC these days. Take a look at the cash-on-hand and debt columns in this chart:

With that kind of debt, maybe the DNC should try sending real collection letters to Tom Perez and the rest of the its leadership.
