Whether it was a lovers’ quarrel is not stated, and neither are the sexual preferences that fueled the deadly altercation. All that is being reported by a local station — Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA — is that the two men, one of whom was in the U.S. illegally, were roommates.
The dead man has been identified as Gregorio Caminero, and the killer as Miguel Cosme. According to the police report:
Cosme … told detectives he had been living with Caminero for three months. He said they were sitting on the couch, drinking beers when Caminero, who was intoxicated, began stating “I don’t like the way you are,” referring to his sexual preference, according to deputies. Cosme told detectives he was insulted by the statement, which he characterized as offensive and discriminatory. He said he became enraged and punched the victim in the face with a closed fist. According to Cosme, the victim fell to the ground, and Cosme started kicking him in the head and groin with steel-toed work boots.
From the description, it would appear that Cosme had subdued Caminero. But he decided to take out a little “insurance”:
Cosme said he then returned to his room and grabbed the knife to defend himself. He told investigators he thought the victim would try to hurt him, so he stabbed him in the neck several times.
Cosme then called 911 to report that he had killed his roommate. When deputies arrived at the Frostproof, Fla., address they had been given, they found Cosme “standing in the front yard with his arms raised.”
At a press conference, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters that the evidence at the scene painted a different picture from the one Cosme had described. He explained that investigators determined that Cosme had “committed an act imminently dangerous to another and evincing a depraved mind regardless of human life.”
Judd concluded his presser with a bit of editorializing:
This is one more example of why the president has got this right. People who come to this country illegally and commit crime have got to go. It’s costing us, the taxpayers of the United States a lot of money.
Cosme has been charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and is being held without bond. Deputies in the meantime have informed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that an illegal alien is in their custody.
