It is now history anyway, deleted (in typical cowardly fashion) by its author after she received a much-deserved spanking from the conservatives she was trying to shame for daring to oppose illegal immigration.
In case you haven’t sen seen it, the tweet, posted Friday and deleted yesterday, remains in the internet’s infinite memory as a graphic image and has been reproduced below for your convenience.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
It’s not instantly clear who the inclusive contraction “we’re” refers to in the tweet, unless Williams — who writes for the liberal rag Salon under the byline Mary Elizabeth Williams — is implying that she is an immigrant. Judging from her pictures, which reveal her to be blue-eyed and fair-skinned, she doesn’t appear to be — at least not of the group whose “rights” she is championing. (Maybe she self-identifies as Hispanic.)
In any case, the responses to her tweet were priceless. Here are a few of the better ones, compiled by Twitchy:
I'm a Republican who cleans my own toilets, raises my own children, and drives my own car. Who do you imagine the Republicans are?

I'm a Latino Republican who also cleans his own toilet, raises his own children and drives his own car.

This is one of the most priceless, though it also touches on the problem I alluded to in the title of this post:
So those are the only jobs for immigrants? Sounds a bit #racist to me, Mary Beth. pic.twitter.com/OXnpsjsl7Q

It does sound racist — which was the entire point of Williams’s straw man argument. She doesn’t believe that the only jobs immigrants are capable of holding down are toilet scrubber, nanny, and limo driver. But she thinks Republicans do, and therein lies the aspect of the tweet that many commentators have overlooked. Williams is trying, glibly, to bully those Americans who oppose full and unconditional amnesty (or something along those lines) for the 12 million illegals currently here.
