Two scoops is in the headlines again! Last week, LU contributor Joe Newby reported on complaints by members of the Fourth Estate who were jealous that Donald Trump received two scoops of ice cream for dessert, while they were served only one scoop.

This time the two scoops are on the other foot. A press release by Ben & Jerry’s informs customers that the Australia branch of the ice cream giant will not serve them two scoops of the same flavor until same-sex marriage is legalized down under. In a very real sense, the company is boycotting its customers!

After noting that 72% of Aussies support “marriage equality,” the writers of the release perform a little thought experiment:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favourite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone. But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry’s has banned two scoops of the same flavour. You’d be furious!…

Then the spring reality on readers:

But this doesn’t even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love. So we are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come – make marriage equality legal! Love comes in all flavours!

Here’s another idea for ice cream lovers in Australia and elsewhere. Walk into your local Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop, ask to speak to the manager, and tell him to take his two scoops and shove them. Tell him that ice cream and politics don’t mix. Finally spread the word. Encourage your friends and family to boycott Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

See if they get the message.
