The audience at last night’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia was feeling the Bern — make that “feeling burned.” The leak of 20,000 DNC emails last week confirmed Bernie Sanders’s worst fears that the game was rigged in favor of the party’s big money candidate, Hillary Clinton. Accordingly, his fans in Philadelphia last night were livid.
Speaker after speaker attempted to assuage their hurt feelings and call in vain for unity at a gathering that right now feels about as disunified as a group with a seemingly common goal can get.
This message became evident early when the crowd wouldn’t even let disgraced, outgoing DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz gavel the convention to order. With boos raining down along with shouts of “Bernie!” comedian Sarah Silverman took to the podium. After delivering ten minutes or so of pep rally-style cheers, she began to exit the stage. Then at the last moment, she turned around and told the “Bernie or Bust” crowd what every angry person who feels cheated and screwed by the system wants to hear. “You’re being ridiculous!” she scolded.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
The video is below. I have it on good authority that Silverman escaped the the Wells Fargo Center with her head still firmly attached to her neck. Judging from the explosion of sound that greeted her chiding, she should consider herself lucky.
