Bahar Mustafa, whose name has appeared in these pages before, is back in the news, though this may be her last hurrah. Mustafa, a student diversity coordinator at a British university, could face jail time over her calls for the extermination of all white men.
The diversity officer at Goldsmiths, University of London, first attracted international attention last spring when she barred white men from an event on “diversifying” the curriculum, and defended herself by claiming that minority women like herself cannot be racist or sexist.
Just days later, she was embroiled in an entirely new controversy when, during a Twitter spat, she repeatedly tweeted out the hashtag #killallwhitemen. She couldn’t be fired or punished by the school because she actually is neither a student nor a school employee. Instead, she is simply an employee of the independent Goldsmiths student union. An effort was made to have her removed from her position, but the necessary petition didn’t get enough signatures from student union members.
Now, though she still has her job, Mustafa faces an even bigger obstacle: criminal charges. According to The Guardian, she’s been summoned to appear in court in November on two charges, sending a threatening communication and sending a grossly offensive message through a public communication network.
While Mustafa’s generalized violent rhetoric against white men would be legally protected in the United States due to the First Amendment (only specific threats may be prosecuted), the situation is different in the U.K., where there are more restrictions on free speech. If convicted, she could spend months in jail.
