Barack Obama’s visit to a federal prison in Oklahoma — the first time sitting president has made such a visit — has received nearly as much coverage as it would have had the president been sent there by a jury of his peers. In fact at one point he whined to inmates that he could have been in the slammer along with them but for the grace of God the media.
But the highlight of his all-too-brief stay was his admission that he has made mistakes. Referring to young people who have been unjustly incarcerated, he acknowledged:
These are people that made mistakes that are not all that different from mistakes I’ve made and mistakes you guys have made.
He stops at this point and waxes philosophical, but it would be interesting to hear him enlarge on what mistakes in his view he has made and whether any of them have occurred in the time he has been president. To the impartial observer, it sure seems like he’s racked up a sizable list of goofs, which he’s never been willing to talk about, much less own up to.
