Dem NY Senator and co-sponsor of the SAFE Act sentenced to 7 years in prison

Malcolm Smith, a prominent Democratic New York state senator and co-sponsor of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s gun-grabbing SAFE Act, was sentenced to 7 years in prison for trying to rig the New York City mayoral election by buying his way onto the Republican ticket.

Via the Democrat & Chronicle:

Smith, 58, first elected in 2000, was the Senate majority leader for the first half of 2009, when a coup that summer ended his tenure. He lost re-election last year.

A federal jury found Smith guilty Feb. 5 of bribery conspiracy, wire fraud, use of interstate facilities to commit bribery and extortion, the Associated Press reported.

He’s one of 30 state lawmakers who have faced legal or ethics woes since 2000.

After his arrest, Smith sent out campaign fliers seeking to reassure his constituents that he is still very much an anti-crime politician.

That unintentionally hilarious flyer appears below:

flyerShortly after passage of the SAFE Act, Smith declared that the bill would “safeguard our communities.”

Perhaps the biggest safeguard for our communities is the fact that another criminal politician is heading off to jail.
