Great news! Al Sharpton calls for ’emergency task force’ after all-white Oscar nominees announced

“Fury as Oscars Go ‘All White’,” proclaimed the main header on today’s Drudge Report in 30-pt type. Clicking on the headline took the reader to a shocking Hollywood Reporter piece noting that “for only the second time in nearly two decades, the 20 Academy Awards acting nominations went to a group made up entirely of white actors and actresses.”

Imagine that: Not a single black actor was nominated for an Academy Award. A cynic might observe that maybe all the best performances happened to be given by white performers, but a cynic would obviously be wrong. One liberal commentator on Twitter (where the hashtag “#OscarNoms” is trending bigtime) noted that the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is currently comprised primarily of old white men, which explains the affront.

As if to rub salt in the wounds of Hollywood types who know better, one of the contenders who was snubbed was David Oyelowo, who plated Martin Luther King, Jr. in the movie “Selma.” The film’s director, Ava DuVernay, wasn’t nominated either, even though the movie itself was nominated for Best Picture.

Never mind that. Word that no blacks are allowed up to the podium to receive acting awards, the Reverend Al Sharpton announced that he is starring in his own movie (in his own mind) titled “Outrage.” Reports Chuck Ross of the Daily Caller:

Sharpton is calling for an emergency meeting of his eight-member diversity task force to discuss action against the Academy Awards after the movie “Selma” received only one Oscars nomination.

“The movie industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher you get, the whiter it gets,” Sharpton said with usual flair in a statement released Thursday after the announcement of Oscar nominations.

“The lack of diversity in today’s Oscar nominations is appalling and while it is good that Selma was nominated for ‘Best Picture,’ it’s ironic that they nominated a story about the racial shutout around voting while there is a racial shutout around the Oscar nominations,” Sharpton continued in his statement.
