Talk about your snakes in the grass! The Detroit Free Press has an unusual tale of an unusual “prank carried out by a mother and her daughter. The pair used weed killer on a selected area of the grass covering the football field at Bedford Senior High School. The resulting shape, which ran nearly the width of the field, resembled a giant male member with testicles.
The woman, aged 50, her 16-year-old daughter, and a 17-year-old male who took part in the stunt all face a felony charge of malicious destruction of turf or soil. The adult also faces a misdemeanor count of contributing to delinquency of children.
Assistant Monroe County Prosecutor Leah Hubbard is quoted as saying, “It was a lot more than a prank given the significant damage and the disruption of school activities.”
School events had to be postponed or moved to new venues, and “countless hours” were spent restoring the field to “playing condition.”
Tim Churchill, a lawyer for the mother and daughter, called their actions “an unfortunate incident with unintended consequences,” adding,
I think what started out maybe in general as a prank turned out to be a very serious matter.
Court documents place the cost of the repair at between $1,000 and $20,000.
The mother was arraigned Friday and released on bond but is not being named because her daughter, who has been temporarily remanded to the Monroe County Youth Center, was charged as a juvenile and is not being identified. The teen, who Churchill said has a 4.0 grade-point average, has a hearing Tuesday.
