With the official title of The Prosecutor General of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Natalia Poklonskaya has not only been installed by Moscow as the new chief prosecutor of the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula. She has also become quite the anime sensation in Japan, South Korea and China, as reported by the anime-centric news portal Kotaku.com on March 19, 2014.
In the wake of tens of thousands of Russian troops occupying Ukrainian sovereign soil in Crimea, Vladimir Putin’s Kabuki theater of attempting to give all the trappings of legitimacy to his land grab includes installing a Russian-friendly government on the peninsula.
And despite her ill-fitting post-Soviet military uniform and unkempt hair, the more-than-slightly comely Lawyer Poklonskaya is following in the footsteps of Mrs. Vladimir Putin (version 2.0) in becoming a social media sensation.
Bearing the shoulder board rank of Councillor of Justice of the uniformed Prosecution Service, Poklonskaya has taken the Japanese world of animation by storm. In her under six-minute-long video clip, Poklonskaya spoke entirely in Russian, with no English or Japanese subtitles initially provided.
Yet for whatever inexplicable reason, both her brief news conference and burgeoning anime images have effectively gone viral in East Asia.
Perhaps her classic Northern European physical features have piqued the interest of more than a few Eastern artists.
