Alabama Dem. claims white GOP lawmakers would abort mixed-race grandchildren

Imagine the outcry if a Republican said this.

Alabama state Rep. Alvin Holmes, a black Democrat from Montgomery, caused a firestorm of criticism on Twitter after claiming white Republicans would abort their mixed-race grandchildren, Twitchy reported Wednesday.

“Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion. On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites that are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion. They ain’t gonna let her have the baby,” he said during debate on a bill that would prohibit abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

“They ain’t gonna let her have the baby,” he added.

“You know that and I know that,” he later said, offering only one piece of anecdotal evidence to back up his claim.

According to al.com, Holmes made his statement after Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, R-Indian Springs, compared the bill she sponsored to the landmark legal case of Brown vs. the Board of Education.

“Can we vote all of these ppl out of office in the next election?! Rep. Alvin Holmes goes crazy and racist,” one person said.

“Rep Alvin Holmes claims 99% pro life white would abort if pregnant by a black? And WE are racist?” another person asked.

“The sad thing is he believes this. Maybe he missed the #MyRightWingBiracialFamily hashtag,” added another Twitter user, referencing a hashtag that was used when a panel hosted by MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry mocked a black Romney grandchild as a token.

Twitchy said that was one possible explanation, but said it’s more likely Holmes “can’t help being a racist jacka*s.”

Regular readers may recall that Holmes slammed Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas earlier this month as an “Uncle Tom.”

In that incident, two reporters from different publications heard Holmes attack Thomas for being married to a white woman.

Holmes, however, claimed otherwise.

“I said some people might say I didn’t like him because he was married to a white woman,” he told Tim Lockette of the Anniston Star.

Nevertheless, he stood by his assessment of the only black person on the nation’s highest court.

“I said I don’t like him at all because he is an Uncle Tom,” he said.

One reader at al.com said Holmes is “dumbing down” his voter base, while another person sarcastically thanked Holmes for putting Alabama on the map.

The bill passed the Alabama House and is headed to the Senate.
