Dartmouth libs use MLK Day to discriminate against independents, conservatives

It seems Martin Luther King’s vision of inclusion and tolerance isn’t welcome by liberals at Dartmouth College.  Two non-liberal students — contributors to the The Dartmouth Review who described themselves as independents — were banned from attending a meeting held by campus activists planning MLK Day activities simply because of their political point of view, the Daily Caller reported Monday.

The Daily Caller’s Robby Soave said that for left wing activists at Dartmouth College, MLK Day is “an excuse to protest ‘far-right imperialism’ and discriminate against conservatives and independents.”

The two students were reportedly barred from entering by a female student who demanded to know their political affiliation.

Sandor Farkas, an 18-year-old freshman at Dartmouth, told the College Fix he and a friend simply wanted to politely listen to the views of others in the name of “positive political discourse.”

But that was not allowed because the two students aren’t liberals.

“What I am really frustrated at is the fact that we can’t have reasonable discussions about these issues,” Farkas told The College Fix. “It has to be very private, secretive – and I don’t think that represents the spirit of MLK or in trying to create an awareness of various issues.”

According to the Daily Caller, the meeting was held by left activists led by Russell Rickford, an assistant professor of history at Dartmouth.

Farkas said he recently met with Rickford, who reportedly holds the view that the holiday is “a tool of the far-right imperialists to appease people,” and should be a day of protest.

“Rickford’s group of activists was responsible for crashing a welcome event for new students last spring, forcing administrators to give in to the group’s demands, which included canceling classes for a day so that liberal students could articulate their numerous grievances,” Soave said.

The College Fix said students from the informal group also interrupted and protested a speech by Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Rickford also champions Malcolm X as a role model for students and, the College Fix added, called Dartmouth “White Supremacy U” after George Zimmerman’s trial last summer.

Farkas said he understands why the leftists didn’t allow him in their meeting, but called it another example of the left’s hypocrisy and intolerance for any view other than its own.

He also noted the school’s regulations regarding freedom of expression and dissent.

“While Dartmouth does not specify what the regulations for holding a ‘closed meeting’ are, I would like to think that any college-sponsored group or informal association of professors and students lacking an official members list cannot exclude non-members from a meeting in a public place owned by the college,” he wrote on his blog.. “If said group does have a member’s list, the college would surely disapprove of this group restricting membership based on private beliefs, especially if those excluded do not wish to cause any disruption whatsoever.”

Liberals, despite their talk of tolerance, have shown themselves to be the most intolerant of opposing points of view.

Last Friday, for example, we reported that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that conservatives who oppose abortion and support the right to keep and bear arms “have no place” in his state.

Last January, we also reported that Cynthia Chase, a Democrat who serves in New Hampshire’s legislature, wants to severely restrict the freedoms of conservatives in that state.

Farkas had a short message for the leftists who want to hijack the holiday: “Let us strive to personally embody this openness. Let us ensure that this upcoming national holiday honoring a great man is not perverted to fit the needs of a group of extremists. I have only one thing to say to those who would discourage constructive discourse: if it is freedom you want, the process starts with you.”
