Trayvon Martin Day canceled at Pittsburgh high school after parents protest

Carrick high schoolTrayvon Martin Day? Is that where the first thousand students to show up at school get a free bag of Skittles? Too soon?

It’s been three months since George Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, and twenty months since the deadly altercation between the two occurred. In the interim, there have been countless tributes to the fallen 17-year-old, including speeches, prayer vigils, a mural (which misrepresented the facts of his demise), and even a proposal that an asteroid be named after him).

Unfortunately, there have also been public claims to the effect that the Zimmerman verdict demonstrated that’s it is “legal to hunt, kill children” and dozens of acts of black-on-white criminal violence carried out in the name of justice for Trayvon.

It would seem that it’s long past time to move on — which is what parents of students enrolled in Carrick High School in Pittsburgh said in reaction to the plan to celebrate Martin’s life during homecoming.

As CBS Pittsburgh notes:

Tensions have since eased and headlines have faded, but at Carrick High School, Martin’s memory has not. And to commemorate Martin, students planned to wear hoodies to make it a positive thing.

But it was not seen as positive by all.

Typical of the backlash was the comment by parent Jennifer Kagle, who told reporters, “I am a little worried about that with the different people, how they’re going to react. Ultimately, the Homecoming Committee relented, changing the theme of the event which occurred last Monday to “Bucco’s Day,” to celebrate the Pittsburgh Pirates’ return to the MLB playoffs after a long drought.

Sadly, that dream came to an end two days later when the Pirates fell to the St. Louis Cardinals.
