After being convicted of espionage against his country, Bradley Manning went from being a Private First Class to a Private. Now he wants the privates of a lass. That’s right, the gender-bending convicted thief now claims he’s a woman, as reported by the news portal 9News.com.au (of Sydney, Australia) on Aug. 22, 2013.
Appearing on NBC’s Today Show, Manning stood with his lawyer David Coombs as he made the announcement:
I am Chelsea Manning, I am a female. Given the way I feel and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I also request that starting today you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun.
Obviously unaware of the military stance towards hormone therapy and sex-change operations, all at taxpayer expense, Lawyer Coombs added:
I don’t know about the sex reassignment surgery … Chelsea hasn’t indicated that that would be her desire, but as far as the hormone therapy, yes.
I’m hoping Fort Leavenworth will do the right thing and provide that.
Though officially banned from openly serving in the Armed Forces, the “transgendered” suffer from what Salon cites as a mental illness known as “gender dysphoria” — a medical and psychological term that describes the experiences of transgender and gender “non-conforming” individuals.
Salon also notes that The Palm Center, a California-based research institute that examined issues associated with the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for more than a decade, has received a $1.35 million taxpayer grant to study the feasibility of integrating the gender dysphoric into the U.S. Armed Forces.
With Manning convicted on multiple counts of violating The Espionage Act as well as many more counts of theft, he/she has earned him/herself a 35-year prison sentence but could be at least eligible for parole after nine years served.
With or without the female hormone treatments or the gender reassignment surgery, Manning very well could find him/herself being treated like a lady by the varied and sundry thieves, rapists and murderers, he’ll be sharing cell space with.
