Obama’s world: U.N. bombards N. Korea (with sternly worded letter)

Take that, Kim Jong-un! How do you like the taste of our steel.

Er, well, steely-worded language, anyway.

Meeting urgently Wednesday to discuss Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test, the U.N. Security Council agreed that it will now “take further significant measures” against North Korea, in line with a 2013 commitment to do so in the event of another test.

That 2013 undertaking was contained in a Security Council resolution passed after North Korea’s third nuclear test, on February 12 of that year.

North Korea announced Wednesday local time that it had carried out a fourth test, claiming to have successfully detonated a miniaturized hydrogen device for the first time – a claim some experts are questioning.

If the Norks aren’t deterred by this, the U.N. will bring out the heavy artillery. Read: A “presidential statement,” which is stronger than a “press statement,” which is what the Security Council sent out yesterday. Where as a press statement is a mere “declaration to the media made by the president of the Security Council on behalf of all 15 members [and] issued as a United Nations press release,” a presidential statement is “a statement made by the president of the Security Council on behalf of the Council, adopted at a formal meeting of the Council and issued as an official document of the Council.”

The statement yesterday consisted of 138 words, each one delivering the equivalent of 4 megatons of red-hot displeasure.

If that doesn’t get results, the next step is ostracism. Oooh!
