Emily Litella lives! The malapropistic character created by the late Gilda Radner back when “Saturday Night Live” was still funny was channeled yesterday by outgoing Sen. Harry Reid.
At a Capitol Hill news conference, the former Senate Majority Leader was applauding the strides toward equality he believed he and his fellow liberals had made, urging, “I think it’s time for this country to look forward, not backwards.”
He then added:
And I’m satisfied that we’ve made a lot of progress with issues relating to LBJ. [Emphasis added]
LBJ? As in the initials of the 36th president? Or is LBJ an acronym for some new protected class, and if so, what do the letters stand for? Lesbians, bisexuals, and Jews?
Reid fumbled for the letters in “LGBT,” which was what he intended to say in the first place. Washington Sen. Patty Murray came to his aid, but Reid didn’t hear her and asked, “What is it?”
“LGBT,” New York Sen. Chuck Schumer repeated, flashing his comedic talents seconds later, when he remarked, “We’ve made progress with LBJ also.”
Reid took one more question from reporters, this one about his meeting earlier Tuesday with House Speaker John Boehner. “I met with him–” Reid started to say but was interrupted first by Schumer, who wittily inserted “Plus LBJ,” and Murray who added, “And BLT.”
The group can laugh, but they should consider themselves lucky that the acronym for the full complement of aggrieved people, LGBTQQIP2SAA, never caught on.
