Barack Obama is in Selma today to help mark the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. That was the day in 1965 when Alabama state troopers violently attacked a peaceful civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Obama will speak Saturday, putting a spotlight on the issue of race relations in the United States — something he has not done frequently in his presidency. [Emphasis added]
Whether one accepts the claim in the highlighted passage, it might be argued that the quantity of the comments the president has made is ultimately less important than the quality. Which is to say that he — and his outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder — have missed no opportunity to make race a divisive issue. And the view of the American people on the state of race relations bears witness to just how much he has done.
But Obama has also created antipathy toward conservatives, referring to them as his “enemies” and subjecting them to ridicule whenever his frustration over his own ineptitude at striking a compromise got the best of him. How surprising should it be, therefore, when a liberal black entertainer tweets a blatantly racist comment, like this one by D. L. Hughley:
Ben Carson is just Herman Cain who can hold a scalpel instead of a pizza cutter! #TeamDl
